We’re drifting in Magdalena Bay, enjoying the sun and calm water, and we’re both facing the same way in the dingy, watching whales blow in the distance.

Suddenly, and I mean suddenly, a young whale surfaces and blows right behind us.  Maybe 20 feet away.

Nancy jumps and screams, scaring the whale.

He dives and swims 100 feet away, then surfaces and looks back at us.

Having played with Labrador retrievers, we recognize the action and start the motor. We parallel his path slowly. He swims, stops, swims, stops, always staying about 50 feet away.

Suddenly, he takes a hard right turn and I cut the motor.

Three quick tail flips, and he’s on our right, 100 feet away.

Then he waved good-by and disappeared.
