We were trying to describe PNW cruising the other evening.
Here are some maps.
La Paz to Loreto, our favorite cruising grounds in Baja, is approximately the same size as the San Juan Islands to Olympia. Or, if you prefer, the San Juan and Gulf Islands. Baja is way, way more exposed, though, and much bigger water. Very few places to hide, Lots of long crossings.
Guaymas to La Paz is approximately the same size as the San Juan Islands to Desolation Sound. In our opinion, in August and September Desolation Sound is the most beautiful area on the west coast, if not the earth. Of course, for the rest of the year it’s dreary. I mean moody. Wet. Damp. Moist. Soggy. Wetter than water.
About 50-100 people make the trip from Guaymas to Banderas Bay/Tenacatita/Barra every year. This is a big trip. It’s about equivalent to trip from Seattle to SE Alaska, which is also a big, big trip. There are a similar number of cruisers that make the Alaskan trip yearly.
